In 2006, TITAN Group adapted a climate mitigation strategy to address issues related to CO2 emissions and their impact on sustainable development in agreement with the Kyoto Protocol. Since 2003, total direct CO2 emissions are reported annually.
Total direct CO2 emissions from our cement and grinding plants were 9.6 million tons, an increase of 11.9% compared to those of 2011. The observed increase is directly correlated to an increase of 11.8% shown in clinker production.
The current goal is to achieve an overall reduction of specific CO2 emissions by 22.0% compared to the 1990 level. It is expected that this target will be reached by 2015. In accordance to WBCSD/CSI CO2 protocol, our U.S.A.-based subsidiary Separation Technology (ST) has contributed in the overall improvement of our carbon footprint. Following the implementation of the latest version of the WBCSD/CSI protocol, specific CO2 emissions that include ST production were recalculated to account for the amount of ProAsh® sold, not the amount produced.
In 2012, our specific CO2 emissions increased by about 6.0% compared to 2011, moving away from the target set for an overall reduction of 22.1% since 1990.
