Environment and alternative fuels
Particular emphasis was given in 2012 to cost containment in Greece through the increased use of alternative fuels and alternative raw materials. The Group’s unflagging intention remains the increased use of alternative fuels by our cement plants. In this context, the Kamari plant continues to innovate by increasing the degree of substitution of fossil fuels with biofuels in the cement production process.
With respect to the use of alternative raw materials in 2012, factories in Greece used 465,000 tons as material for cement production, with a corresponding reduction in the consumption of natural (primary) raw materials.
In 2012 almost all investment went towards equipment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promote the use of alternative fuels and upgrade hygiene and safety at work.
